In the late 60's the São Mamede Gallery opened its doors very close to the Principe Real, in a Pombaline building on Rua da Escola Politécnica. He has always dedicated himself exclusively to Portuguese modernism and the contemporary movement, with occasional exhibitions by foreign artists. He has had an intense and quality artistic activity, supported by "classic" artists who have always been linked to the Gallery (such as Areal, Cesariny, Cruzeiro Seixas or Julio) but also, and above all, by new artists. In 2005 it expanded to the city of Porto and in 2019 it expanded its premises in Lisbon with the opening of a new space 50 meters from the initial premises with a wider and contemporary space.
